I found Dave White’s “Visitor/Resident” discussion to be very interesting. While watching, I felt that his discussion seemed to clarify some of my own thoughts regarding internet use, and I was able to identify where I fall in terms of the visitor/resident space. I seem to teeter between both visitor and resident on the internet due to my perceptions of both privacy and purpose. While I do find myself identifying with being a “resident” on the internet, I tend to often fall under the “communal” category of resident that White describes. He explains a communal resident as someone who is not always collaborating; someone who can be a part of a community and yet “stay quiet” within that community. An example of myself as a communal resident would be my twitter use. Although I am progressing in becoming more collaborative in this social network; I see myself as communal, because I tend to follow other people as a means to find new educational information. I do not produce my own scholarly articles to share with the world, nor do I pump out dozens of tweets per day that establish myself as having a “brand” as White suggests. I would say that the CSUSM teaching credential program has really helped me in becoming more of a permanent resident online than ever before.
